Welcome to my site! Below is just a summary of what I do - you will find more details and images in the sections which follow. (Photographs of new ranges of work taken by Steve Christian, Masham)
I make playful, tactile, ceramic pieces, most of which have a story to tell. The surface patterns reflect a love of the countryside, the coast, or the sea; or an enjoyment of folk and textile art, sewing and handicrafts. I have always been fascinated by “worlds in miniature” – rock pools, dolls houses, bonsai, embroidered samplers – and my work often depicts favourite images from the world around me, in miniaturised form.
Occasionally, for exhibition, I also produce sculptural work to reflect more abstract ideas – stories from World War 1 (Prayer Tree, with “letters” from the front - The Durham Light Infantry Museum 2014); a juxtaposition of fabric and flame ("Cushions & Candlelight", Newcastle College final year show, 2013); the transitions that occur in learning (“Learning Tower” - The Arts Centre, Newcastle 2012); the moments between change and stillness (“The Tipping Point” - The Shipley Gallery, Gateshead, 2011).
